Working with Layers

Page 2

When you "right click" on a Layer, its Menu appears and the following operations may be selected:

Step 2.  Place you mouse over one of the layers and "right click".  Now you can see all the items listed below.

1. New Raster Layer...Basic Drawing Layer
2. New Vector Layer...Layer to change curves
3. New Adjustment Layer...controls various color alterations of image
4. Duplicate...Duplicates highlighted layer
5. Delete...Deletes highlighted layer
6. Rename...Allows you to rename highlighted layer
7. Properties...Allows setting layer properties
8. View ...Current or all layers
9. Merge ...Visible or Flatten all
10. Convert to Raster (currently "grayed-out")...If a layer is a background this will convert it to a Raster layer.

You can also place your mouse over a layer and it will show you the image that is on that layer.

Let's play with the different layers and see what happens.

Step 3.  Turn Off All Layers by clicking on Eye Glasses of each layer. Now you have a Red X's on top of the glasses.

Now look at the image. You can only see a transparent layer.  You can no longer see all the parts of it.

Now watch your image as we click on each Red X.

Step 4.  Beginning with Layer 1, turn on each Layer by clicking on the Red X, one at a time.   See how it returns to the eye glasses to make each layer visible in your image again?

Let's look at the OPACITY SWITCH (circled in red):

The Opacity Switch lowers the visibility of a layer. Doing so blends this layer with the layer below it, giving it a faded appearance.

There are two ways to use the Opacity Switch.

Step 5.  Place your cursor on Image6 in the Layer Palette. Hold the left mouse down and drag the switch to the left to about 50. Now look at your image. See how the little chick (circled in red) next to the chair is now faded?

If you wanted to lower the opacity on more than one layer, just follow the same steps we just covered. You can set the opacity to any level you want.
