Looking for some great tubes?  Click on this button.

This tutorial is divided up into three pages to save on download time.

Things you will need:

  • PSP: You can download a trial version here.

  • The layered image Zip: You can download it here

  • Win Zip: If you don't have a program that unzips files, you can get a trial version of WinZip here.

Contrary to what some think, learning to use the Layer Palette and working with layers is very easy. Once you master the use of layers you'll find yourself working with layers more and more.

You can do many different things to your images by using layers.  Layers also make it possible to edit different parts of your image without having to redo the whole image when you aren't happy with just part of it.

Layers are just transparent images, one stacked on top of the other, allowing certain parts to show through or to be covered up, give them a "faded" look, and allowing  you to combine images to end up with a whole new image. You can add, delete, edit, fade, move layers around, etc. You can also view all layers together or hide individual layers while working with other layers.

We will be using six images so you can become familiar with using the Layers Palette and its basic functions.

I took a tube and divided it up into separate images for this tutorial. Then copy/pasted each image to the other as a new layer.  This way you can see how it was all put together while learning how to use the Layer Palette.

We are only going to cover only the basic features of the Layer Palette. There are other, more advanced features, but we will cover those in another tutorial.

Preparing to start this tutorial

Once you've downloaded the files you need for this tutorial, you need to unzip the "ImageZip" file and save it into a folder on your hard drive.

Let's begin exploring this wonderful little tool called the "Layer Palette".

Step 1. Open the ImageZip in PSP, if you have not already done so.

Let's look at the different parts of the Layer Palette before getting started.

The Icon Bar (Image below):
Create Layer (circled in red) - creates new layer above the layer that is highlighted.
Delete Layer (circled in yellow) - deletes the layer above the highlighted layer.

The Layers:
The Layer Property (circled in blue): Layer Name
On/Off Switch (circled in green): Eye Glasses
The Opacity Switch (circled in black): Currently set to 100
The Mode Options (circled in purple): Currently set to Normal
