Step 1. Choose two colors you want your background to consist of. One a light
color and one a darker color. I will be using these colors:
.
Step 2. Open two new transparent images with these settings:

Step 3. Click on your "Flood Fill" tool
and
flood fill one of the new images with your light color.
Step 4. Click on the second new image you opened and flood fill with the darker
color.
Step 5. Now open another new image with these settings:

Step 6. Make your "light colored" image active by clicking on it. Go to
Edit/Copy.
Step 7. Now click on the new image 100x100 transparent image you just opened to
make it active. Go to Edit/Paste/As New Layer. Your image should look like
this:

Step 9. Click on the "Mover" tool
and position
this new layer in the top left corner. The far right side of the image
should rest at coordinate 50 and the bottom should rest at the center 50
coordinate.
Step 10. Repeat steps 7 and 8, except this time use the dark colored image. Now
position it to the right of the light colored block. The left side and bottom
should be at coordinates 100,100.
Step 11. Continue repeating steps 7 through 10, alternating the colors, until you have
the image filled with the blocks. When you have finished, the image should look
like this:

Now we are going to add our stitching to the background.
Step 12. Choose a darker color for your stitching than the "darkest" color you
used in your background.
Step 13. Click on the "Draw" tool
and use these settings.

Step 13. Place your cursor at the top left corner of your image and while
holding down your left mouse, draw all the way over, and a little past the far
right side. Be sure your line is even and not jagged before releasing the mouse. Repeat this until
your have all four sides stitched.
Step 14. Now place your cursor in the center at 50 and draw all the way
down to the bottom.

Step 15. Place your cursor at "center-left" 50 and draw all the over to the right side of your
image.

Your "Stitched Checkered Background" should now look like this:

Step 16. Now go to "Layers/Merge/Merge All, and save your new "Stitched
Checkered Background".
That's it.
