This tutorial will cover changing the size of your image.

If you are really new to PSP, I strongly recommend that you take my other tutorials of "Getting To Know PSP" and "Opening & Saving Images", before doing this tutorial.

Why would you want to resize your image?  Well, there could be a lot of reasons.

  • So your graphic will load faster on your web page

  • So your image will fit into a frame

  • To make buttons for your background sets

There could be lots of reasons you may want to resize your image.

Things you will need:

PSP:  You can download a "Trial Version" version here

You can use any tube you like, but if you would like to use the one I'm using click here.

Okay, let's get started.

Step 1:  Open your tube image.

To see the width and height of this image, look at the bottom right hand corner of the status bar.   Here:

Now before we start resizing, let's look at the different fields on our "resize" window.

  • Pixel Size: By choosing this option, you can set your image to a definite size by either width or height.  Remember, when doing anything with sizing, the first number is always width, and the second number is always your height.

  • Percentage of Original: By choosing this option, you can resize your image by a percentage instead of working by pixels.   I use this setting when I am adding an image or text to another image, and I'm not sure what the size needs to be.  By using this setting, I can choose a percentage and change the percentage until I obtain the size I need.

  • Actual Print Size: This is for resizing an image for printing rather than onscreen viewing.
    - Width and Height are self-explanatory.
    - The drop-down menu on the right of W and H is for if you want to work in cm, inches.
    - Resolution is for your printer resolution.
    - The drop-down menu on the right of Resolution is to set it to be pixels / cm or pixels / inches.

  • Resize Type: You have four types to choose from:
    - Smart Resize: This pretty much allows PSP to handle the resize results.  When I tried using this one, it gave me a loss in quality.  I don't recommend using this setting.
    - Bilinear resample: This is good for reducing the size of your image. If use this on gif images, I recommend that you  Sharpen your image once then save as a gif. On other types of images, use your own judgment.
    - Bicubic resample: This is good for enlarging the size of your image.
    - Pixel resize: I haven't used this setting before so I have no idea what the result would be using it. I'm really not even sure what it's for.  :-)

  • Resize All Layers: With this option checked, all layers of your image will be resized to the size you choose. If it is unchecked, then only the active layer will be resized.

  • Maintain aspect: With this option checked, the height will automatically be adjusted by PSP, when you change the width, so the image won't be distorted when it's resized.  If it is unchecked, and you only change the height, and your width will be set for you so that your image will not be distorted.

  • ratio of ... to 1: Where the image says 0.8185 (this may be different if you are using a different version of PSP,  or if you have made any changes to the image), I have never changed this setting, so I really don't know what the effect would.
