If you took the tutorial of my "Getting to Know PSP 7", you now have
a basic knowledge of the PSP options and layout. If you haven't
taken this tutorial, and you aren't familiar with PSP 7, then I strongly
recommend that you do that tutorial first. You're
probably feeling really excited about creating some cool stuff with your new
toy and to that I say "GO FOR IT". You can learn a lot just by playing
around and having fun. I am offering these tutorials to help shorten the
learning curve for you, and take you a step closer to creating
lots of neat stuff. In this tutorial we're going
to discuss some basics about opening new images existing images, and talk
about saving the images you create. The
File Open Dialog Box is one way to open an existing image. You can access
this dialog box by either clicking on File/Open on the Menu Bar:
 or the
Open
Icon on the toolbar, which looks like this:
or you can use the keyboard shortcut,
which is Ctrl+O. Whichever method you use will open a
window that looks like this: I have all the things
discussed below circled in different colors on this image. So refer to
these as we discuss them.
 You can navigate to
the file to open by clicking the arrow on the far right of the "Look In"
window (circled in blue) and choosing from the directory, by clicking on the
arrow at the far right (circled in
red). Notice the "Files of Type"
circled in green. The dialog box will only display choices of the file type selected. You can change the file types displayed by clicking on the
arrow on the far
right (circled in gold). Here I've chosen "All Files" so I'm certain I'm seeing everything in
the directory. In the big white area, you will see the names of images within
the folder you chose to "Look in". Left clicking once on a files name
within the white area will display the file in the
"file name" window and highlight it in
blue (circled in pale blue)
in the main box. When a file is
chosen, a thumbnail view (circled in
pink) of the image will appear in the window below if you
have the "Show Preview" box checked (circled in
pale green). Now you can open the image by clicking
the open button or double clicking the
file name. From the "File"
button on your menu bar you can access the
PSP Browser. The browser is a great way to
visually select the image you're looking for. Another way to access the
browser is the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl+B".

The
browser window looks like this:
 The left
portion of the browser displays the directory tree for easy navigation to your
image files. The right portion displays thumbnail views of all the images of
the chosen directory. You can select an image in the
browser by clicking on it. To open an image double
click on it, or just drag it to the
workspace. By selecting File/Preferences/ General Program
Preferences/Browser from the menu bar you can change the
size of the thumbnail
displayed as well as the selection color. You can
do this as the image below shows.
From this location you can also
uncheck the "Save browser files to disk" box. I strongly suggest doing this so
you're not cluttering up your hard drive with these browser files every time
you open it. To do this, open your "preferences"
as we just discussed above. Click on the "Browser"
tab. It will look like this:
