"Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to
the things which we have heard,
lest at any time we should let them slip." (I John 5:4)
It's happened to all of us. We get a little of the Word
of God under our spiritual belts. We have a few victories. Our lives are
going great for the first time in years. Then suddenly we slip and it all
falls apart. We find ourselves having to start all over again.
Hebrews was written to a people like that. They made such great spiritual
progress that they got to the place where they should have been teachers.
Then they slipped back so much, they needed baby food again. (See Hebrews
5:12.)
What caused them to fall so far? They let other things get in the way of
their faith. They let the promises of God slip, so they slipped.
That's happened to a multitude of believers in the last several
years...myself included. Life can throw so much at us and satan puts so many
temptations in front of us, that sometimes things just get cloudy, and we
can't see, then we are more focused on the "problem" than we are God's Word.
I've heard people say, "We're tired of that faith stuff. I've prayed and
prayed, but nothings happened." Or, "We just don't have time to spend that
much time in the Word." This is where we get into trouble. We're focused on
the problem and not the solution.
Have you noticed that the more time you spend with the "problem" the bigger
it looks and you start thinking "I can't do this. I will never get out of
this mess. I can't go on." That's because we put more faith in the problem
and at that time we are living, breathing, and expecting more of it. This is
when it's critical that we spend even more time in God's Word, claiming His
promises to us. Speaking them out our mouth and not letting worry and
defeat consume us.
We've all turned their attention away from the promises of God at some point
or let words of doubt and unbelief come out our mouth. It's not that we
didn't believe them anymore. It's just that we directed our attention more
to the problem. We let our Word level drop and since low Word level
equals low faith level, we soon began suffering defeat in areas where we
once had victory or could and will have victory if only we had stayed
focused on God and His promises, as well as speaking His Word against
it...whatever it may be.
We as believers, don't need to let that happen, but we do. When things are
going well, we don't need to just ride the tide of God's blessing. We need
to dig deeper into what God has for us. We need to give more earnest heed to
the promises of God. Concentrate on moving ahead, on becoming so strong in
the Spirit that we can not only get our own needs met, we can meet others'
needs as well as well as trusting God to bring us throw!
This is not always easy. I understand this...believe me, I do. I have
challenges right now, I let it get me side tracked....allowed them to be
mine main focus so much, that they were bigger than my faith. I just did it
yesterday. This is more dangerous that we realize. When we allow our "faith
level" drop and we only see the "problem/sickness/pain, etc.", we are
opening the door for satan to come in and reek havoc.
"Test and trials will come". We need to remember this.
Instead of letting them take our focus things of God and generating our
faith in the problem, that's when we need to focus even more on the Word and
all God's promises.
Remember: Low Word Level = Low Faith Level = Slip.
Don't get so busy enjoying today's victory or letting the
"tests and trials" that pop up cause your tomorrow to end up in defeat. Look
into the things you've learned. Give the Word more of your
attention--not less. Keep moving from faith to faith. Instead of trying to
trip you up, Satan and his bunch will be crying, "Oh no, that faith man/woman is coming after us again!"
And remember, we know "Who Holds Tomorrow".
